About the role:
We are seeking an innovative Mechanical Engineer to join a large-scale, progressive farming enterprise in Western Australia. This role will be pivotal in designing, optimising, and maintaining mechanical systems across a diverse agricultural operation encompassing broadacre cropping, livestock production, and emerging horticultural ventures.
The successful candidate will apply engineering expertise to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and reliability of farming infrastructure, machinery, and processing systems. Key Responsibilities:
Agricultural Systems Design & Optimisation:
• Plan, design, and oversee the implementation of mechanical systems for crop processing, grain handling, irrigation networks, and livestock infrastructure across multiple properties.
• Develop innovative solutions to improve the efficiency of broadacre farming equipment, including seeders, harvesters, and soil preparation machinery.
• Contribute to the design of sustainable infrastructure for emerging horticultural and tree crop operations.
Project Management & Installation Oversight:
• Manage the assembly, erection, and commissioning of mechanical plant installations, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and safety regulations.
• Coordinate project labour, material deliveries, and equipment deployment to meet operational timelines across remote farming locations.
• Establish quality control protocols for mechanical installations and modifications.
Workforce & Equipment Efficiency Analysis:
• Conduct time-motion studies and analyse operational data to optimise labour utilisation and machinery performance.
• Assess facility layouts, material flows, and production schedules to enhance workflow efficiency in grain handling, livestock processing, and storage systems.
• Develop maintenance schedules and reliability programs to minimise downtime of critical farming equipment.
Mechanical Equipment Specification & Development:
• Design and specify components, machinery modifications, and custom solutions to address unique agricultural challenges.
• Select appropriate materials, piping systems, and mechanical configurations for farming infrastructure projects.
• Collaborate with external manufacturers and suppliers to ensure equipment meets operational requirements.
Regenerative Farming Integration:
• Engineer systems that align with sustainable farming practices, such as precision agriculture tools, energy-efficient processing equipment, and water-saving irrigation technologies.
• Support the transition toward diversified land use by contributing mechanical expertise to horticultural and agroforestry initiatives.
Essential Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of post-qualification experience in mechanical design, project management, or agricultural systems (experience in farming operations is highly regarded).
• Proficiency in CAD software, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, and mechanical fabrication.
• Strong problem-solving abilities with attention to detail in design and implementation.
• Ability to convey technical concepts to non-engineers, including farm managers and operational staff.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously in remote locations while collaborating effectively with on-site teams.
Desirable Attributes:
• Experience in agricultural machinery or food processing systems.
